Funeral of John (Jack) Smith

4th January 2010

Return to Reports 2010 Index

Generally funerals are not a happy occasion, but Jack’s send off was truly a celebration of a man who used all his 77 years to the fullest.

Jack’s life as read out by his family members was amazing and unbeknown to most of the VMMA members attending he enjoyed so many wonderful things in his life.

He was heavily involved with many community organisations and always willing to give a helping hand and assistance particularly to the CFA and Lions, to name but two.

Apart from being a competent mechanic Jack had a natural ability to play many musical instruments. His pleasures also included water and snow skiing, fishing and boating, flying and racing motorcars to name but a few of his passions.

Jack was highly respected and regarded in the various communities in which he lived; Mansfield, Falls Creek, Marlo, and was awarded at least one community Australia Day honour for his hard work and support to community activities and programs.

The funeral room was packed to standing room and after the family had explained many of Jack’s adventures and accomplishments (which were extremely interesting and at times quite funny).

Jack was a long standing Freemason and just this year was awarded his 50 year jewel and certificate. He took the mastership of at least 3 Lodges over that time and was said to have supported a number of other Masonic programs.

The current Worshipful Master and brethren of the Mansfield Lodge performed the Masonic Funeral Service.

Most listening may have felt that this service was rather sad and dark but the words spoken have deep and important meaning for all.

The reception was held at the Mansfield Masonic Centre with Elva (Smithy's) wife thanked the VMMA for attending.

At the conclusion of the service the local Civil Celebrant (wife of a local Mason) invited us to form a guard of honour around the hearse. Family, friends, Masons, CFA, SES, and many others lined the driveway to see Jack off while the local Police blocked off the road.

We retired to the Masonic Centre for refreshments.

Again the attendance was good and the supper room was full in no time. VMMA members remained until around 5pm and then headed down to Maindample for a cupper and chat with local VMMA members Peter and Pam Mahoney.

It is just about time for us all to depart Peter and Pam's and head home to Euro, Bendigo, Phillip Island, Moe and Mooroolbark.

VMMA members in attendance at the funeral included Pedro, The Red Baron, Chris and Sharyn, Bob and Jean, Dave and Viv, Gary and Glenda, Colin Randall, David Hall, Pam and Peter Mahoney.
