Report of Visit to Healesville Lodge No. 247
Wednesday 12th December 2007
The VMMA members and friends were invited to attend Healesville Lodge on Wednesday 12th December by the W.M. Bro. David Wells (VMMA member), this particular meeting was Open to the general community both male and female to listen to Ian Gray from the Western Region Disability Network.
This meeting follows the VMMA AGM held at Maldon when VMMA member Leigh Martin spoke of the Western Region Disability Network (WRDN) that has members with disabilities that have been coached in Public Speaking who speak of their own personal real lift experiences.
Ian Gray traveled with his wife from Werribee to discuss his life journey before and after being diagnosed with MS.
The presentation was given by Ian Gray from the Western Region Disability Network who spoke about his life and adventures while dealing with Multiple Sclerosis. It was a fascinating speech which showed courage and determination to enjoy life to the full and not allow the disease to rule and govern his life.
There was a great response from visiting Brethren, Ladies and Guests with 46 people present to listen to Ian’s speech.
David took the opportunity prior to retiring for supper to explain to the visitors the various dress codes that are acceptable in lodge under specific guidelines.
The night was non-ceremonial, (no Open and Closing, no Regalia etc), which meant all visiting Brethren, Ladies and Guests came into the Lodge room at the start of the meeting.
The meeting started with the Wor. Master wearing his regalia and briefly explaining a little about the Apron, Collar and Cuffs to the non-masonic members of the audience. He then handed the floor over to Leigh Martin, (VMMA member), from the WRDN who introduced Ian to all in attendance. Ian then proceeded to tell his story which was then followed by many questions.
Leigh Martin accepted the donation on behalf of the Western Region Disability Network (WRDN).
In the South we were treated to W.Bro. John Mackay playing bagpipes and Phil Dalliston from Admiral Collingwood Lodge playing Irish pipes, this was most enjoyable and very well received.
The proceeds from the evening was $230, this money was presented to Leigh Martin, Coordinator from the WRDN to assist in covering Ian’s expenses in traveling from Werribee for the evening plus a little extra to go towards their organisation.
